Sainsbury’s supermarket store in Brentwood has raised £6444.96 for Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal following a year of in-store fundraising.

Since 2009 Sainsbury’s stores have each selected a Local Charity of the Year to partner with, raising over £13 million nationwide. In July 2016 GTCA was voted as the Brentwood store’s charity of the year following an in store and online vote between 3 nominated charities.

Staff in store, encouraged by their “Great Place to Work” team, were a great support to fundraising throughout the year, wearing the charity’s t-shirt one weekend every month to raise awareness of the charity and encouraging customers to put donations in the buckets at the checkouts. The amount raised was boosted by specific bag-packing weekends when volunteers assisted shoppers with their groceries in return for a small donation. This was an especially lively event at Christmas when the choir from Brentwood Ursuline preparatory school sang Christmas carols for shoppers in the store entrance.

Triple support at Christmas from Kuzay, Koray and Ayaz Cericki and their brother Kutay.

In May, Funky Voices, Essex and Suffolk’s largest award winning modern choir joined GTCA volunteers in store to produce a fantastic spectacle and lift shoppers’ moods.

The supermarket also supported GTCA’s event team at the 2017 Brentwood Half Marathon and Fun Run by entering runners in the team and donating £200 towards the catering stall the charity runs at the event each year.

It’s been a privilege to have been chosen as Sainsbury’s charity of the year this past 12 months. It has really helped to raise our profile within the community and we’ve received so much encouragement and support from both staff and customers. As a small charity made up solely of volunteers, all the money raised by Sainsbury will directly support Essex families and will make a dramatic difference to many families’ circumstances during a very challenging time.” Kirsty Dailly, Chair, Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal.

We are delighted to have supported Georgia’s Teenage Cancer Appeal by fundraising for them for the last 12 months. Being situated in the heart of the Brentwood community it’s important to our customers and staff that we can make a difference to a local charity. I know that the amount that’s been raised will really help GTCA continue the excellent work and support they offer to families in Essex who have a child with cancer.” Mervyn Chilvers, Store Manager, Sainsbury’s Brentwood.

Thank you to everyone that shopped in Sainsbury’s over the last year and made donations at the check-outs.
